Three of the twelve brushes, rebuilt small for the web from the app's own numbers. A finger on an iPad has no pressure sensor, so Pincel lets speed stand in: a slow stroke is a heavy one and a fast flick tapers. This sheet does the same with a mouse or a finger, and reads the pressure and tilt of a stylus that reports them. Brush Colour Twelve brushes ## A drawer of brushes, and every one behaves. Pencil, crayon, marker, watercolour, oil, spray, chalk, glitter, rainbow, stamps, patterns and an eraser. Each one is a stamp engine, not a line with a texture on it. A stroke is a smooth curve walked at a fixed spacing, with a textured stamp at every step. Each stamp adds just enough colour that the overlaps build to the stroke's own opacity and stop there, which is why the watercolour stays a wash instead of turning into felt pen. All the tips are drawn in code when the app opens. The picker shows a real stroke from each brush, not an icon of one. Free for good 4 - ### PencilFree Thin and grainy. Apple Pencil ## Everything the Apple Pencil can say. Pressure, tilt, direction, hover, double tap, and on Pencil Pro the squeeze and the barrel roll. A tilted crayon goes fat and soft, exactly like the one in the drawer. - ### Pressure Press harder and the marker darkens. The pencil needs a press before it goes dark at all. - ### Tilt Lay the Pencil flat and the crayon goes fat and soft, exactly like the one in the drawer. - ### Direction The crayon and the oil paint's bristles turn to follow the stroke, the way real ones do. - ### Hover Hold the tip just above the glass and an outline shows the brush and the colour it will paint. - ### Double tap Does what the Pencil is set to do in Settings: swap to the eraser, go back to the last brush, or open the colours. - ### SqueezePencil Pro Squeeze a Pencil Pro and the colour picker opens. - ### Barrel rollPencil Pro Roll a Pencil Pro between the fingers and the marker's chisel nib turns with it. - ### No Pencil at all A finger works everywhere. It has no pressure sensor, so speed stands in: a slow stroke is a heavy one and a fast flick tapers. Apple Pencil only mode, in the grown-ups area, stops a resting hand from painting. ## Twenty four colours, and a pad to mix your own. The pots run warm to cool, then browns and neutrals, picked so any two neighbours mix into a colour still worth having. The mixing pad blends two of them in a straight line, the way gouache does, and Make my own opens a full colour wheel. All of it is free. Tap a circle, then a colour, and drag between them. Mixed #975B8A ## One stroke, sixteen times. Symmetry paints everything again on the other side: mirrored left to right, top to bottom or both ways, or turned into a kaleidoscope of six or eight. On an Apple Pencil Pro, the Pencil taps back once as a stroke crosses a mirror line. Lessons ## Forty lessons. Nothing is ever marked wrong. Each step shows the target as a faint ghost on a locked layer; the child draws their own version on top. Nothing is scored and nothing is ever marked wrong. ### The cat, in nine steps 1. Start with a big circle for the head. 2. Now two ears like triangles. 3. Two round eyes. 4. A little dot inside each eye. 5. A small triangle for the nose. 6. Two curves under the nose make a smile. 7. Long whiskers on both sides. 8. A soft body under the head. 9. Two paws and a curly tail. Every lesson runs eight to eleven steps, the big shape first and the details last, across animals, faces, things that go, food, dinosaurs and flowers. Six are free, one of each: Cat, Car, Big teeth, Tulip, Sun and Apple. The same cat in the app, at step 9 of 9. ## Sixty pages. The paint goes under the lines. Tap to fill or paint by hand. The line art sits on its own layer so paint slides underneath it and the drawing stays crisp. Every page is drawn from closed shapes, so a fill cannot leak out of a wing, and a test checks all sixty. Twenty of them are the finished drawing from a lesson: learn to draw the cat, then colour the cat. Ten pages are free. ## Three layers, and no more. Three plus a background is enough to separate a sky, a subject and a scribble. Any more would make it a professional app rather than a child's one. 1. Top sheet a scribble of stars 2. Nothing a child makes is ever locked or watermarked, and every painting exports as a PNG to Photos or Files whether you buy the unlock or not. Up to four children can paint on one iPad, each with a name and a colour. A grown-up can tidy the gallery from the parent area, one painting at a time or all at once. ### What never leaves this iPad - **The paintings.** No account and no server of its own. Every painting, lesson and colouring page lives inside the app, on this iPad. - **The children.** A profile is a name and a colour, nothing else, and it stays on the iPad it was made on. - **The photo library.** Saving to Photos adds the one picture you asked for. Pincel cannot see the rest of the library. - **The room.** No camera and no microphone, ever. No ads, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. - **Everything else.** The sounds are synthesized on the iPad and a PDF for printing is laid out there too. Nothing is uploaded. The free lessons and pages are picked across the categories, so the free tier reads as the whole app rather than the start of one. ## Questions from grown-ups. **Does it need an Apple Pencil?** No. A finger is fully supported everywhere. A Pencil is the nicest way to use it, and Pencil-only mode is there so a resting hand never paints. **Why iPad only?** Because a canvas smaller than a sheet of paper is not a painting app, and the Apple Pencil does not exist on iPhone. Half the product would be missing. **Can a parent tidy up the gallery?** Yes, from the parent area, one painting at a time or all at once, for every child.
