Recognition is matched against the sentence on screen. The word expected next is amber, the ones already read are green. No score, no timer, no race. Audio stays on this device An animated reading card cycles through real cards from Lector's decks in English and Spanish: The cat naps., El gato duerme., Rain drips on the roof., Papá lee un cuento., She has a red bushy tail. and Lola come pasto verde. Each word is outlined in amber while it is expected, turns green once heard, and the microphone bars move while it listens. - grey, not yet - amber, next - green, heard - orange, tapped ### How it matches - Case, punctuation and accents are set aside on both sides, so *arbol* lights *árbol*. - A plural, or a word that trails off, still counts when it starts right. - Order is ignored, and one spoken word lights one word on the card. - The bars follow the live volume. They show the microphone hears, not how well. The real card on iPhone, before the microphone starts. ## It never says wrong. A word it does not hear just waits, amber, until it is heard. The child taps it, hears it, and tries again with a parent. Skip is always on screen. The words after it wait in grey. ### Tap a stuck word, hear it in syllables The word fills the screen, split with dots (ca, sa), with Hear it for the whole word and Slow for one syllable at a time. Every split in the decks was written by hand, and a test checks that each one spells its word. Word help on iPhone: elephant, el · e · phant. ## Read a real book. Point the camera at a page, tap a line, and it becomes a reading card. The photo is never saved and never leaves the device. Vision finds the printed lines, on the device. 3. ### Tap a line to read it. The picture waits behind the lines, dimmed. 4. ### It becomes a reading card. The same green words, and a stuck word still opens its help. In Spanish, a word from a book is split into syllables by rule. 5. ### Take another picture. The last one is dropped. It was never saved and never sent. A picture with no words on it gets a plain answer on screen: No words found on this picture. Try closer, with more light. ## The microphone never reaches a server. Lector has no account and no network at all. ### Never kept Audio: no audio file is ever created, and a test scans the source for any audio file class. The book picture: held in memory while its lines are on screen, then dropped. ### When listening stops When a card is done, when word help opens, while the phone speaks, when the app goes to the background, and after twenty seconds of quiet. ### Kept, on the device only A first name and a colour per child, deck progress, and for each session the words heard, the time and the words tapped. The parent area turns that into words per minute, never shown to the child. ### If a device cannot listen on its own Lector says so, in these words, and stays a reader: every word can still be tapped to hear it. If a device has no on-device model for the reading language, the app says so rather than sending audio anywhere. **Which languages?** English and Spanish. The interface language and the reading language are set separately, so a Spanish speaking family can practise English and the other way round. **What happens when a word is not recognised?** Nothing bad. It stays amber until it is heard, the child can tap it to hear it split into syllables, and Skip is always available. There is no fail state anywhere in the app. ## Lector is almost here.
