# Anima. Stop motion with a toy and a table.

stop motion studio

Move the toy a little, tap, move it again. The last frame ghosts over the live view so the child can see how far it went. Then play it back, tell the story over it, and export a real video.

Move it a finger's width, take a frame. The last one stays behind as a ghost.

Scene 1 Set up

## A phone that cannot move, a toy, a table.

Everything a film needs is already in the house. The first time, How to film walks through it in eight short pages, and it stays one tap away on the home screen.

1. 1 / 8

   ### Prop up the phone

Lean it against a cup or a book so it cannot move. Point it at a table with good light and put your toy on the table.

2. 2 / 8

   ### Wide or tall?

A new film asks once. Wide is like a TV, tall is like a phone. The screen stays that way for the whole film, even if the phone tilts.

3. 3 / 8

   ### Move a little, take a picture

Move the toy about a finger's width. Tap the red button. Move it again, tap again. Eight pictures make one second of film.

Scene 2 Capture, with the ghost

## See how far the toy moved.

The previous frame sits over the live view at an adjustable opacity. It is the one thing that turns eight random photos into an animation.

Move the robot

The robot stands a finger's width past its ghost. Take a frame to film it yourself.

**Try it.** Take the frames yourself, change how far the robot moves, and turn the ghost down to nothing to feel how hard it is to guess. Far from the ghost means a fast jump; close to the ghost means slow and smooth.

The real capture screen

1. Ghost strength, from 0 to 70%. It starts at 40%.
2. A grid, for lining the toy up.
3. The self timer.
4. The strip, every frame numbered.
5. The shutter: silent and instant.
6. Play what is there so far.

On set Why the frames match

## Sixty frames should look like one film.

A camera app tries to make every photo look its best on its own. A film needs the opposite: every picture made the same way as the one before.

**Lock on.** Every frame gets the same focus, light and colour.

**Lock off.** The camera re-guesses each picture, and the film flickers.

- ### Focus and exposure hold still

After one autofocus pass, focus, exposure and white balance lock. Without that, the light flickers between frames and the film looks broken.

- ### Silent, instant, identical frames

A frame is the current video buffer, not a photograph, so there is no shutter sound, no wait, and no chance the camera decides to process frame nine differently from frame eight.

- ### Hands off the screen

Press a volume button to take a picture. Pressing a physical button shakes the phone less than tapping the screen, and the self timer counts down for anyone who wants to walk into the shot.

Scene 3 Play it back, fix it

## A pause is a frame held.

Long press a frame to hold it two, four or eight times. Pauses are how children tell a story, and without this they take eight identical photos.

Playback runs at 2, 4, 8, 12 or 24 frames a second, and eight is the classic stop motion look. In the strip a frame can also be dragged to a new place or deleted.

Frames per second

Hold 0006.jpg

12 frames at 8 per second: 1.5 seconds.

**Try it.** Pick a speed, tap a frame in the strip and hold it. Held copies keep the same file name, because the order of the film is the film.

Scene 4 Sound and voice

## Their voice over their film.

Record a voiceover while the film plays, and tap in up to eight sound effects at the moment they happen.

- Pop
- Boing
- Whoosh
- Ding
- Bonk
- Zap
- Splash
- Tada

Press record and the film plays from the start, so the story is told over the pictures it belongs to. The voiceover is free. The eight effects come with the unlock, and all of them are synthesized in the app rather than loaded from sound files.

Scene 5 Titles and export

## The End, then a real video.

### Title cards

A start card with the film's name and an end card, each in one of six looks. They are drawn the same way on the screen and in the exported video.

- Look 1
- Look 2
- Look 3
- Look 4
- Look 5
- Look 6

### A real video, with no watermark

- A film comes out as a video file, 1920 x 1080 when it is wide or 1080 x 1920 when it is tall, at full quality.
- Share it straight away, or save it to Photos.
- The first three exports are free and come out exactly like an unlocked one.
- The unlock makes exports unlimited, adds a 24 fps export, and turns on green screen: film in front of a green or blue sheet and the sheet becomes a backdrop.

- Backdrop 1
- Backdrop 2
- Backdrop 3
- Backdrop 4
- Backdrop 5
- Backdrop 6

On iPad Every screen, bigger

## The same studio on iPad.

Anima runs on iPhone and iPad with a rear camera, in any orientation. These are the iPad screens, in the order a film gets made.

1. **0000** On the table
2. **0001** Home: New film, How to film and the child's films
3. **0002** How to film, page 4: Follow the ghost
4. **0003** Capture: the rocket over its ghost
5. **0004** The strip: move, hold x2 x4 x8, delete
6. **0005** Playback at 2, 4, 8, 12 or 24 per second
7. **0006** Sound: the voice and eight effects
8. **0007** Titles: a start card and The End
9. **0008** Export: your film is ready

Wrap Whose film it is

## The films belong to the child.

Unlimited films and unlimited frames, free forever. Files are never renamed behind their back, and the order of the film is the film.

    Projects/
      one film/
        frames/ 0001.jpg 0002.jpg 0003.jpg
                 0004.jpg 0004.jpg 0004.jpg held
                 0005.jpg 0006.jpg 0007.jpg
        thumbs/
        voice.m4a

A held frame is the same file listed again. Moving or deleting a frame changes the order of the film, never the names of its pictures. A child can delete a film of their own; the app asks first.

Privacy What stays in the room

## Pictures and voice stay on this device.

Camera

A picture is kept only when the shutter, a volume button or the timer takes one. The pictures stay on this device.

Microphone

Records only after record is pressed, to tell the story over the film. The recording stays on this device.

Photos

Asked only for permission to add, and only when a finished film is saved there.

Network

None. No account, no ads, no tracking, nothing sent anywhere. Nothing leaves until the child chooses to share the video.

Delete

Erasing a film removes its pictures, its voice and its record together. A cancelled export leaves no file behind.

Free and unlock One payment, once

## Films are never locked.

Questions Asked on set

## Questions about Anima

**Does the exported video have a watermark?**

No, and it never will. The three free exports come out at the same quality as an unlocked one.

**How many frames can a film have?**

As many as there is room for on the device. Only a short playback window and the ghost frame are ever held in memory, so a long film does not slow the app down.

**Can they use the volume buttons as a shutter?**

Yes, which is the steady way to do it: pressing a physical button shakes the phone less than tapping the screen. There is also a self timer.
